We take on just 16 trainees , so we expect them to play a large part from day one. If we choose you, it’s because we see the makings of a high-performing trainee – possibly even a future partner.
This means more than an excellent academic record, at least a 2:1 in any discipline. Strong analytical skills are vital. We’ll also look for the ability to see the whole picture, the ability to quickly assimilate a wealth of information and identify the main issues. Sound judgement is key too. You’ll need to be logical, meticulous with detail and able to make well-reasoned decisions based on all the evidence. Finally, you won’t be afraid to question and challenge the accepted way of doing things.
Strong, productive relationships – with colleagues as well as clients – are vital to every area of our work. So you’ll need to be skilled at expressing yourself clearly and succinctly, both face-to-face and in writing. A good listener, you’ll know how to tailor your message to your audience, build rapport and be persuasive.
You’ll need plenty of this to take on and meet challenging goals, keep going when the going gets tough and respond well to feedback. Resilient, keen to learn and ready to shoulder responsibility, you’ll always keeps the end result firmly in mind. What’s more, you’ll be enthusiastic even under pressure and able to get a job not just done, but done brilliantly.
We’re known for sound commercial judgement so you’ll need the potential to develop the same skill. Ultimately, you must be able to identify the concerns of clients, appreciate both the long-term and short-term implications of a proposal and maximise opportunities. What will get you off to a great start is a real feel for how the business world and the legal sector operate.
