HIghlighting the rotations

Two years, four seats and as much responsibility as you can shoulder. That’s what we offer the 16 trainees we take on each year. And because our training is not only structured and practical but highly personalised, you’ll be able to develop along a path that’s absolutely right for you.

SH-Quote-Jenn

"In my current department I get basically one to one tuition with a partner so if I’m working on anything I can get immediate feedback and discussion, which is brilliant."

Your training programme combines practical experience, legal education and soft skills training. Here’s what’s on offer:

  • A week’s intensive induction
Plus a comprehensive post-induction programme that continues in your first seat. As well as giving you an overview of the firm and how we work day-to-day, the initial induction will allow you to meet other new trainees and existing ones.
  • Four seats
Each six months long, across any four of our corporate, commercial litigation, employment and pensions, finance, marine and international trade, and real estate practice groups – and we ask you to give us your top three choices so we can accommodate your preferences where possible. This will help you discover which area of law you want to practise in when you qualify.
  • An international seat
Trainees can also apply to gain experience overseas in either our Hong Kong or Singapore office.
  • Stimulating, cutting-edge projects
Each seat offers you as much responsibility as you can shoulder. You could find yourself working on anything from a high-profile, multi-million pound financial litigation case to a groundbreaking M&A deal. You could even spend time at a client’s office, absorbing a totally different business culture first-hand.
  • On-the-job coaching and mentoring
You’ll share an office with a partner or senior solicitor who’ll give you regular feedback, advice and guidance on everything from your day-to-day role to your long- term career decisions.
  • Off-the-job training
A programme of legal education and soft skills training – which will see you complete the Professional Skills Course (PSC).
  • Flexibility
Because our intake is deliberately small, we can be flexible around your personal ambitions and work with you to create the career path that suits you best.
  • An open, friendly culture
Our open-door policy means you need never be shy of asking questions – someone will always be willing to help.
  • Continuous review
Monitoring of your career development both during your training contract and after qualification.
